A 240W USB-C cable can be exactly the right cable for charging a power-hungry laptop and still move files at USB 2.0 speed. That is not a contradiction. The 240W figure is a power capability; it does not describe the cable's data speed or promise a display signal.

USB-IF makes the separation explicit: USB Type-C is a connector system, while USB Power Delivery, USB 3.2, and USB4 are separate capabilities that a product may or may not implement. Its guidance even describes USB-C cables that support Power Delivery up to 240W but operate at USB 2.0's maximum 480 Mbps. So two cables with the same reversible USB-C plugs can be built for very different jobs.

What the 240W mark actually answers

It answers one narrow question: how much power the cable is designed to carry under the relevant USB Power Delivery arrangement. It is useful when your charger and device need substantial power. It does not tell you how quickly an SSD will copy, whether a dock gets a high-bandwidth connection, or whether a monitor will receive video.

Apple provides a clean current example. Its 240W USB-C Charge Cable is listed for charging up to 240W and USB 2 data rates. Anker documents its 240W braided models as USB 2.0 with Power Delivery 3.1 and up to 480 Mbps. Belkin lists the same combination for its BoostCharge CAB015: up to 240W PD 3.1 and up to 480 Mbps. These are legitimate high-power charging cables, not mislabeled high-speed data cables.

Why the combination exists

Charging and data use different parts of the overall USB-C feature set. A cable intended chiefly for charging can omit the higher-speed data implementation needed for USB 3, USB4, or Thunderbolt. That can make it a sensible product when those functions are unnecessary. A phone charge cable does not become a poor choice merely because it is not the cable you would choose for a fast external drive.

The costly mistake is treating wattage as a bundle of unrelated capabilities. If you need only wall charging, first match the cable's power rating to the device and charger you actually own. A 240W maximum will not make a 65W laptop charge at 240W. If your real task is backup, a dock, or a display, power is only one item on the checklist.

Buy by the job, not by the connector

Do not infer the second or third row from the first. “USB-C” alone is not enough, and “240W” is not enough. For a display, look for a stated video capability as well; many USB 2.0 charging cables are not designed to carry video.

The device can still set the limit

Even a 40 Gbps cable cannot create a 40 Gbps port on a computer, phone, or drive. Likewise, a display connection depends on the source device, the monitor or dock, and sometimes their settings. The cable's specification is the ceiling for that cable path, not a promise that every connected device can reach it.

That is the practical answer: buy a 240W USB 2.0 cable confidently when you need high-power charging and modest syncing. Buy a cable with clearly stated USB3, USB4, or Thunderbolt data and display support when that is the work you expect it to do. The same connector can serve both roles, but one product does not automatically do both.
