Before choosing a portable air conditioner, measure the window opening and the route from the unit’s exhaust connection to that opening. Then compare cooling ratings on the same basis. A unit with more rated cooling can have a shorter hose or a larger minimum window panel, making it a poor replacement for your existing installation.

For cooling only, the Whynter ARC-14S and ARC-1230WN illustrate the tradeoff. Both advertise 14,000 ASHRAE BTU/h, but their listed SACC (seasonally adjusted cooling capacity) ratings are 9,500 and 12,000 respectively. The ARC-1230WN offers the higher adjusted rating and inverter operation; the ARC-14S lists a longer maximum supplied hose and a smaller minimum panel. For heating as well as cooling, consider the Midea MAP14HS1TBL—but include its heating-mode drain arrangement in your installation plan.

These panel dimensions describe the documented components, not a guarantee that every window frame can accept them. The Midea manual shows hung and horizontal sliding windows. A casement window needs a different installation solution; do not assume a sliding panel seals it.

Why one portable AC has two BTU numbers

SACC means seasonally adjusted cooling capacity. The DOE procedure accounts for heat entering the room through the duct surfaces and through outdoor air drawn into the conditioned space. That adjustment makes the rating useful when comparing portable units: compare SACC with SACC, rather than matching one model’s ASHRAE headline to another model’s adjusted number.

For these two Whynter models, the identical 14,000 ASHRAE headline therefore does not mean identical adjusted capacity. The ARC-1230WN lists 12,000 SACC versus the ARC-14S’s 9,500. Use that distinction after checking installation fit; it does not turn an incompatible window kit into a suitable one.

A narrow opening can change the recommendation

With a 22-inch opening, the Midea manual’s 19.1–23.3-inch panel combination is relevant. The current ARC-14S manual also starts below that length. The ARC-1230WN’s listed 28-inch minimum is larger. That does not make installation impossible: Whynter discusses trimming panels. It does mean you should not buy it expecting the listed assembly to fit unchanged.

Measure usable opening dimensions and frame clearances, not the outside dimensions of the whole window. For an existing portable AC, compare the new panel and hose connections rather than assuming the old kit transfers.

The hose maximum is not the distance from the floor to the window

Measure the actual route between the appliance connection and window adapter, allowing for positioning and gentle bends. The ARC-1230WN’s 47-inch hose can be more restrictive than the ARC-14S’s 60-inch hose even though the former has the higher SACC rating. Keep the exhaust route short and follow the model’s installation instructions. Do not add a generic extension simply to make an otherwise unsuitable location work.

Heating adds a water-disposal requirement

The Midea manual requires the drain hose when using heat mode. It describes a condensate pump that permits the drain hose to rise up to 6 ft / 1.8 m, with the specified routing and an unobstructed discharge. That limit concerns the water drain, not the air-exhaust hose. If you cannot provide an appropriate drain destination, the extra heating function may not suit your room.

Confirm the kit before ordering

The current ARC-14S manual lists a 56-inch maximum panel, while the separately listed ARC-WK-DUALN replacement kit stops at 46 inches. If your opening falls between those values, check the contents of the exact listing instead of treating every ARC-14S package or replacement kit as identical.

Choose the model that satisfies installation and operating needs first. Use the cooling rating to compare capacity, then check the exact package, seller and return conditions. A headline BTU number does not settle those questions.
