Choose a label maker around the label you need to read, not the number of fonts on its box. For short names on folders, drawers and small containers, the Brother PT-D220 offers a keyboard and tapes up to 12 mm wide. The PT-D610BT is the more useful upgrade when you need 18 or 24 mm tape, want to prepare labels on a phone or computer, or regularly print batches with automatic cutting.
There is a catch in the larger model’s headline: 24 mm is the tape width, not the printable height. Brother specifies a maximum print height of 18 mm on 24 mm tape for the PT-D610BT. Actual characters can be smaller. If your design needs a solid, edge-to-edge printed band, do not buy it on the assumption that “24 mm” promises that result.

Start with a paper strip before buying wider tape
Cut a plain paper strip to the width you are considering and hold it against the intended surface. A broad storage-bin front and a narrow drawer lip are different jobs. This simple size check can tell you whether a wider label is useful or merely occupies space you do not have.
Next, sketch the information that must fit: a short name, a name plus a date, or several separate fields. A wider cassette gives you more layout options, but it does not guarantee that a particular font size or number of characters will fit. Preview your design and allow for margins. Tape width and label length are separate dimensions.
When the PT-D220 is enough
If you walk from drawer to drawer typing short names, the D220’s on-device workflow is its attraction. A phone connection adds little to that task. Its limit becomes decisive when you already own, or plan to buy, 18 or 24 mm TZe cassettes: those widths are outside its supported range.
Account for power in the purchase. The D220's standard US package includes sample tape, but neither batteries nor an adapter. An advertised bundle may differ, so read the exact contents rather than assuming that every D220 listing is ready to use out of the box.

When the PT-D610BT upgrade earns its place
Choose the D610BT for a real workflow change: wider labels, preparing designs on a supported device, or repeated batches where its automatic cutter is useful. The keyboard still lets you make a quick label without starting a connected editing session. Check current software support for your operating system before making phone or computer printing the reason to buy.
Its US support table permits up to seven lines on 24 mm tape, but only three on 12 mm tape. Buying the larger machine does not make a narrow cassette behave like a wide one. More lines also do not establish readability at your chosen viewing distance; layout matters as much as the available line count.
Buy the cassette for the surface, too
Matching the TZe family and width is the first compatibility check. Then select the tape construction and adhesive for the intended surface and use. A label for a folder, a curved cable and fabric need not use the same cassette. Do not treat a successful fit in the machine as proof that a label will stay attached in every application.
Keep a working narrower machine if it already does the job. Upgrade when the required width or editing workflow exceeds it, rather than buying more capacity in the hope that it will improve every label.
